So I have read both Stanford, and kens books on tournament play. Both mentioned betting strategies when behind Ken(2,4,5) and wong 1/7, 1/3, all in. Are theses sort of one and the same, or should they be used at different times etc?

    Tricks of the Trade

The rule of 2, 4, and 5 is a good way to attack a player on your left who is ahead of you and has been matching your bets. It's generally not to be used on the last two hands, especially the last hand.

The 1/3 then all-in progression is for when you want to get back into contention against the leaders at your table. Bear in mind that in most tournaments there is a maximum bet limit that makes it impossible to use this kind of fractional progression. Also, there are more efficient ways to use your bankroll. It's a fallback plan if your math skills are failing you (happens to the best of us) or if you're running out of time.

If you must use a progression, you'll probably use what Wong called setting up a progression. It's been my experience in all-in tournaments that increasing your bankroll by 1/3 will not be good enough. You can use a bet that, if won, increases your bankroll enough so that following up with a 1/3 progression will actually be enough to meet your needs. Wong didn't put it in his book but you don't have to work too hard to figure this setup bet. A setup bet of 1/5 of your bankroll does the trick. In every scenario in which you survive the progression this 1/5 setup bet puts you into a progression that increases your bankroll by 3/5.
