I saw the Canadain Masters tournament listed on Ken's up coming events calender next month, Thursday, March 18th in Ont. Canada.

I called up to check on the format and found it is a one day tournament, $1,000 entry with $150,000 in prizes (Canadain).

The clerk told me you get one night included other nights are $209 weekdays and $239 weekends (costly). You fly into Buffalo, NY and take an hour long taxi to the casino (about $80 she said).

When asked how the weather was up there she told me it was nice, she walked to work that day. Then she went on to tell me it varies from +1 to
-10%. She also added "You may want to bring your winter coat".

    Duh! you think so.....LOL

    I've Been There.....

.... and it's not that cold! Of course I have the same weather here in southern Michigan. LOL

But seriously Rick, it is a nice one day tourney. I have been to a couple of the qualifiers without success. I have opted to stay at some off site hotels/motels for about $75 CND.

The fallsview casino overlooks the falls, at least one side does. If you get a room oposite the falls side they come as cheap as $109 CND during off season. The farther away from the falls you get, the cheaper the lodging gets.

I highly recommend the buffet though at the Fallsview casino. If you eat early you can get choice seating without waiting that over looks the Falls.

I plan on making a few more trips this year to qualify for a "free" seat in the final event.

P.S. Attached is a zipped file that contains the rules that they had when I played for those interested.

    Sounds like a great time

I had seriously considered attending this event until the Beau Rivage announced one that weekend in my own backyard.

I believe that Vince Costa won the Niagara event last year.

    Actually.....

The forecast for March 18 calls for freezing drizzle, -28 F.
Buffalo airport will be closed down and all the Hotels in the Niagara area are fully booked.
Biometrics will be screening all advantage players at the front door of the Casino.
So, all you rattlesnakes, particularly Joep please stay home and give us locals a chance. I am the idiot who invited V.Costa last year and the welcome mat is no longer out. :joker: :joker: :joker:

    Thanks BJFAN4

Hell if you want us all to come up how can we say no...LOL

Actually I am thinking about coming up to check it out. Kidding aside when does it start and end?

Is it better to come in on Wed. leaving on Thursday evening or early Thursday leaving on Friday. Or do you need to come in the day before and leave the day after?

    Actuall P.S.

Tx: tournament starts at 1pm on Friday with registration. Play starts at 2 and everything is over by 8. So, you can fly in Friday morning, stay in your free room Friday nite and fly out Saturday. The under option is to come in Thursday, stay in your free room Thursday nite and fly out late Friday. It's really a one day tournament. Closest airport is Buffalo (1 hour) and Toronto Pearson International (1.5 hour).

Joep: I will personally have our Canadian AP catchers backroom you and show you some old fashion hospitality. On the other hand, if our "BJ tournament Virgin" shows up, I will arrange for a limo to pick him up, since we are really afraid of him and his tournament skills. :joker: :joker: :joker:

    Thanks BJFAN4

I'm glad you posted the 18th of March was a Friday! Talking to the casino they told me the tournament was on Thursday 18th, (as per my first post)!
I am seriously thinking about coming up to play next month.

Is it an elimination format? How large is the turn out? Is this a qualifier event or the finals?

    BJFAN4 Question and Tx Comment

Rick - March tourney is the final for the season. It is elimination style and the qualifiers seat about 140 as I recall. Take a look at the rules I attached earlier, I think this was included there.

BJFAN4 - Do you know if they have another year planned for this series? If so do you know what dates the qualifiers will be?

    Thanks,
    Dan

 Hey, maybe everyone can stay at BJFAN4 place! He said he was a local! :joker:

    Extra night maybe the best

I check and the best seems to come in on Thursday and leave on Saturday, so not to be so rushed. I wished they were holding this on Saturday so Bobbie (my wife) could go with me.

I was told about 100 signed up (or won entry) so far. Up to 147 total players, with 7 players per table on 21 tables. One winner advances and second place has option of reentry into semi's.

Niagara Falls Tournament Clarification - No Rebuys - 147 Players

There are three rounds with 7 players per table; in the first round (21 tables), the top two players at each table advance; in the second round (6 tables), the top player at each table advances; and for the final round one wild card is drawn.

    Thanks

I was told only the first advances and second could re-buy into the second round if they wanted, I like the way you tell it much better.

    Qualifiers vs March Final

    Rick,

The final held during March may be a little different than the qualifiers that are held throughout the year as fathermurph states.

In the qualifiers the 1st place advances and the 2nd place is offered a re-buy into the second round. If the second places turns down the rebuy then it is offered down the line.

The rules also state that if the tourney is not full they will also offer a re-buy for another 1st round for the others. I have not seen this actually offered during my two visits last year because the qualifiers have always been full at 147.

    Killjoy!

Dan, your killing me....LOL. Thanks both FatherMurphy and Dan for the information. I guess I will see ya'll up there. Guess I better go buy some sub-zero clothing so I don't freeze....LOL.

What is the best (cheapest...LOL) way to get from the airport (Buffalo) to the casino? Any suggestions?

BJFan if your offer for a limo is still on I'll take you up on it and I'll take care of dinner for you.

    Transportation

A rental car is probably the best way to go at about $30 per day.

I will probably use Enterprise at the Buffalo Airport. If you use an Amex card, enter "AMCDISC" as a discount code and you should receive a 25% discount.

    All set

I signed up today for the Canadain Masters and I found out that it will be 1st and 2nd advancing from round #1. As far as a ride to the casino, they said they would pick me up so that is taken care of.

Looking forward to meeting everyone up there. see you in a couple of weeks.
