I saw this offer at Buy.com today and thought some of you might be interested:
Until April 16th, they're offering Norton's Internet Security 2005 for $61.49, but with a mail-in rebate of $32, and also a competitive/upgrade rebate of $30, which brings the price down to *zero*.

It appears to be eligible for free shipping too though I haven't tried it yet.

The second rebate is available to "previous owners of a stand-alone or pre-loaded version of any Norton or Symantec software product, or owners of any retail (boxed or downloaded) software product from McAfee, Trend Micro, or Zone Labs (excluding pre-loaded and OEM software from McAfee, Trend Micro or Zone Labs)."

Typically that means you'll have to mail in the cover of the manual or some other type of proof that you have one of these products. Even if you don't the $32 rebate applies to everyone.

Get Norton Internet Security 2005 for free.

This software includes Norton Antivirus, Norton Personal Firewall, Norton Privacy Control, Norton AntiSpam, and Norton Parental Control.

    Beware of conflicts with SP-2

I read somewhere that Norton had a problem with the Windows SP-2 upgrade. I understand that Microsoft lists the programs that conflict with the SP-2 upgrade. Norton has probably straightened this out, or has a patch to fix it.

Norton would have to pay me!

No thanks to anything from Norton. Free is not a good enough incentive for me.
My desk-top has been screwed up for 2 years because of Norton. And just try to contact them! I can't even completely delete it. And besides that Symantec is anti NRA.

free virus checkers and malware checkers

I use all free programs that are highly recommended by geek sites.

1- AVG anti virus - very good antivirus, but you must update yourself. It runs when your computer starts. Uses very little memory.
2- Ewido security suites - auto updates for a while - good on viruses and malware. It runs when your computer starts. Uses very little memory.
3- Spybot Search & Destroy - You must update and run about every week to get rid of malware.
4- Adaware Personal Edition- same as Spybot S & D.

If you are having anykind of computer problems, these programs can sniff most of the bad stuff out.

Also, WIN PATROL is a good program that won't let anyhing change your startup programs without your permission, and notifies you when something is trying to change your home page.

All legally free - all work well, and all can be easily removed, if you don't like 'um. Just search for them in Google. WATCH OUT FOR IMITATORS.

I think I'm probably going with Jim's approach, and installing AVG. The more I thought about Norton, the less I liked this idea, and I never ordered.

Their antivirus is OK, but that Internet Security program is a nightmare.
