Are the "Free" tournaments really free?

    Two on-line casinos are going to host "FREE" $1,000 to $1,100 blackjack tournaments for us over the next couple of weeks.

    Global-Player is offering a $1,100 free roll Thursday July 20th @ 6:00 pm EST. Plus one free re-buy limited to the first 125 players

    Payouts:

    1st = $400
    2nd = $250
    3rd = $150
    4th = $100
    5th = $ 50

    Now the new guys on the block Blackjack21.com are going to offer a GRAND OPENING - $1,000 blackjack tournament "Absolutely Free" on Thursday July 13th, or are they?

    After reading past the $1,000 tournament "Absolutely Free" you soon realize that it is only free entry if you do the following:

    Deposit $110 and play 5 - $20 tournaments and get the next one FREE, to qualify for the $1,000 guaranteed tournament or;

    Deposit $55.00 and play in 5 Mano a Mano $10.00 tournaments and receive free entry into the guaranteed $1,000 tournament.

    I called Blackjack21.com today and talked to "Randy" (seems like a nice guy). I asked him how their tournament could be listed as "Absolutely Free" when there are restrictions to getting in?

    Randy explained it was just a grand opening promotion to draw in more players. I explained that we (the blackjack community) don't like false promises and guarantees. I suggested that they offer this first $1,000 tournament as advertised "Absolutely Free".

    It is their tournament and it is still a nice deal, but it is not what is advertised. For a company starting up and trying to get new players, they are not starting out on the right foot if they don't honor what is advertised. Fear of getting cheated playing at on-line events in blackjack is still the number one reason players don’t play on-line BJ tournaments. If they force these restrictions it will just be another reason for players to fear playing on-line blackjack (at least at blackjack 21.com).

    The blackjack community is easy to get along with and we welcome blackjack21.com to our community. We simply expect you to do what you advertise.

    Get in cheap

    Im going to be out of town for the blackjack21.com kind of free tournament. But, if you wanted to play for cheap deposit the 55$ and play mano games which give you about 50-50 chance of holding your investment. Lets say you lose 25$ worst case I hope! It will cost you theoretical $25 to play the free 1000$ tournament. Hmmm?

    Barney

    btw, I play alot with a randy there, a good player. Bet thats him you talked to tex! I often get the suspicious feeling Im playing with the owners! Online gambling, shady! Enter at your own risk! Global isnt much better, after looking at their site and reading FAQs many of the questions had to do with "does my play at other casino games effect my scores in blackjack gamemaster etc" as an example was that quote. The tournaments are money makers for them. Not a direct take but a take is the goal. JMO.

    Baloney Barney!!!!

    You are too cheap to play at Global....that site is the best for tournaments around!!!!!Blackjack21 disconnects and leaves you hanging...can't get back in until your game is over.....you lose your money! I've played there and the player quality isn't anywhere near Global player quality! If you want a bargain sign up for Globals FREE tournament on July 20th!!!!!

    Barney like I said in my earlier post, the blackjack21.com $1,000 (as you put it - kind of free tournament) isn't a bad deal. The problem I have with it is that it is advertised as an "Absolutely Free" tournament.

    I am worried if they don't play their Grand Opening tournament as advertised it may effect not only that tournament, but future play on their site from the blackjack community.

    Nothing is free!!!

    I know where you are coming from Tex but I can read between the lines of these promotion offers; nothing in life is free!! OK the blackjack21.com freeroll isn't exactly free because you have to have a real money account with a minimum investment and play a certain number of games. But is the Global Freeroll actually free? I haven't looked into the details at Global but can you play in the freeroll if you have a play money account only? Or is it open to real money players only? If it's open to real money is there a limit?

    Mikey - Barney can speak for himself but as he hasn't yet so I'll cover for him. Barney has an Apple Mac. Global don't support Macs. I know that he is waiting for some virtual pc software to be delivered, and when it is I'm sure we will be toubled by him at Global!! I am personally am looking forward to it!!

    Cheers

    If you want to comment on your own experiences...do so...I was pointing out the things that are a fact from my point of view.You do not have to put up one cent to play July 21!!!!!Barney made a statement about Global...how can he make judgements when he can't play on the site to evaluate it?

    Free is free over at Global-Player.

    Hi Reachy,

    At Global-Player their Free rolls are "FREE" to anyone that signs up to play, no catches. Every blackjack free roll I have ever played in is 100% free. The blackjack21.com "Absolutely Free" tournament is being run like one of the poker free rolls where it isn't really free unless you put up and or play at the site first.

    Once again it is a cheap way to get a shot at a $1,000.00 tournament, but it isn't free.

    My opinions on Global

    Im not calling anyones sister ugly here, all Im doing is stating that, IMHO, free is a loose term here. It is a business decision by Global management to comfort gamblers with the site. This offering of free playing will draw players in. It is a wise business action. For those taking the advantage offered great. I would guess many living in LV or other good gambling areas wont have a problem saying no to online games that, IMO, are carnival action at online casinos. But, for many the very draw of playing video poker or whatever will be too much. This is why free aint really free. I dont know how it works, yet, but Im guessing I can pay for my tournament play exactly to the cent. 40 bucks with debit card and then whatever for a rebuy I doubt I'll need , LOL. Just IMHO free is free for a reason. I will use it as that, free besides the cash to buy in. I wont play other games. I have a hard enough time playing a six deck game at a live casino.

    It is not free at global (or is it????)

    I emailed Global to see what sort of account you needed to play in the freeroll and they got back to me and said you needed a real money acount, which by implication means you need to deposit some money, so technically not free. However in the meantime my brother registered for a play money account, attempted to register for the freeroll and succeeded, so I guess it is free, but maybe they aren's so sure at GP :confused:

    Just sign-up, no money required

    At Global-Player all that is required from a player to play in the $1,100.00 free roll is to sign-up with Global-Player. No deposit or limited number of tournaments need to be played to play in there free roll.

    Now this is what I refer to as "Absolutely Free"!
