I've been warming up for tournaments recently and hit a little road block. Now the strategy for the first and second rounds are pretty simple. Advance or bust out trying, but when I get to the final table I hit a road block, and either I win the tournament or I bust out with a fairly low position. So my question here is what do you guys do at a final table? Go for broke and make a play for first or play conservative and try to cash higher than you would if you tried for first and failed?
I think it would depend upon the payout structure of the tournament. A tournament heavily weighted to first place would call for winning the tournament being your main goal even if it entailed much more risk. A tournament that spreads the money down to lower finishers in more even amounts would allow you to consider less risky strategies. In the end, you would have to decide what side of the risk/reward fulcrum your strategy lies on and take the appropriate action. Playing one table sit-n-go's can help your final table skills in poker. The same should be true for blackjack. If you aren't already playing them on Global, you might give that some consideration.
