Man kills himself at Niagara Falls casino blackjack table

    April 5, 2007, 3:44 PM EDT

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) _ A man fatally shot himself at a blackjack table inside the Seneca Niagara Casino Thursday.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, walked onto the gaming floor about 10:30 a.m., pointed a gun at his chest and pulled the trigger, casino spokesman Philip Pantano said.

He died soon after at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.

Guns are prohibited inside the casino but the facility does not check visitors.

"Entering the casino is not unlike entering a mall or shopping plaza," Pantano said. "This is an open facility."

Last June, a man jumped to his death from the fifth floor of the casino parking ramp, Pantano said

Rumor has it that he just finished playing blackjack after reading and studying John Patrick's book on how to be successful at blackjack :joker:

The other patron that jumped to his death last June also had John Patrick's book in his hand when found on the street

I am good friends with a guy who has been dealing for casinos all over the country for the last 25 years...he workes for Seneca right now...

He has told me about this type of thing happening at every place he has ever worked...although not usually on the floor...rather outside in the parking lot seems to be the popular spot.

Guy loses everything and decides its just too much....

Not everything about gambling is rosey.

    Sad story....

Rick when exactly did you become the voice of reason here on BJT?

These 2 cases were not accidental deaths, they were 2 individual's who decided to take their own lives.

My reference to John Patrick was intended to bring to light that fact that following this mans advice could lead to a personal disaster.

He recommends in his teachings to split 5-5 against any dealer weak up-card.His point is the dealer will break 42% of the time.

I guess he forgot to calculate that remaining 58% of the time that the dealer will make some sort of hand between 17 to 21.

this is a DAS play against a dealer 456. Its a way to get a chance of putting more money on table against the weak dealer.

    DAS Strategy

Splitting 4's is not done against the dealer 4 when using BS. It's only done against 5 or 6 if DAS is allowed or planned.

    impotent play

Because I mostly play single and dbl deck the play is impotent because the complementary cards have been depleted. If I have two 5s and dealer has 6 she has one of my most important cards and I already have two of them. If the count is very low it becomes worse because we are each in a drawing position and I wont hit my 15 like she will her 14 even tho we are in the drawing posture. If the count is high I have a better chance of drawing a 10. I dont use this play because of the depletion and the fact many of the games I play dont allow DAS.

Let me say this again and I dont care what the bloviation crew says about the book, JPs Advanced BJ book turned me from a small loser to a small winner and has added a great deal of comps via the conservative low yielding sessions. The most important part of the book that turned me, by a couple %, is the money management, discipline, and trend tacking he teaches. The basic strat has little to do with why I use his ways.

And Barney's not even talking about splitting 4s. He's talking about splitting 5s!

    My Bad

I must've misread Barney's post. You'd only split fives in a tourament when it's imperative to get three bets out. I can count on one finger the number of times I've ever done it.

    This is what Joe said

<<He recommends in his teachings to split 5-5 against any dealer weak up-card.His point is the dealer will break 42% of the time.>>

Then I gave the reasoning behind the play
<his is a DAS play against a dealer 456. Its a way to get a chance of putting more money on table against the weak dealer.>

After which Monkey replied and then I posted my opinion titled

    IMPOTENT

    Please Clarify

I deleted my post asking for clarification because Barney's last post and mine "crossed in the mail," so to speak.

If you didn't support Patricks 5-splitting advice, perhaps you should have replaced your response:

<his is a DAS play against a dealer 456. Its a way to get a chance of putting more money on table against the weak dealer.>

    with this instead:

"Its a way to get a chance of putting more money in the dealer's chip tray."

    Impotent play

The play of splitting 5s is impotent even as a DAS play. If you are playing a single or double deck each 4 5 or 6 has a big impact on the probability of getting another 4 5 6. So, if you are lucky enough to see a scenario of player 5-5 vs dealer 6 you have impacted your chance of getting a good double chance of 10 or 11 because you have immediate and obvious depletion of 5s and 6s. This alone makes it a bad play.

I have actually developed a counting sytem that deals with 4s and 5s in a ratio to 10s. It not only tells of rich deck of 10s but tells when to hit 16 against a 10 up card for dealer. I devised the counting system after reading about the RULE of 45 in a book. I cant remeber which book it was right now. But the rule of 45 says if you can see other players cards and your own- each 4 and 5 impacts the 16s chance of pushing or beating a dealers 10 vs player 16. A common question for me to ask during a cards face down game is "do you have any 4s or 5s"

One of the better books I read a while back is Ian Anderson's book. Among his many solid pieces of advice, he suggested some minor changes to Basic Strategy for the purpose of "cover". His suggestions only give up a very small percentage to the house but in return one looks like a ploppy (he doesn't use the word "ploppy") to the suites. Mr. Patrick, on the other hand, makes one into a ploppy without the unsuspecting realizing it - no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

One book I have not read, and this is a real book, is "HOW TO GAMBLE AT THE CASINO WITHOUT GETTING PLUCKED LIKE A CHICKEN". Just judging from the title, I think it should be bundled with Mr. Patrick's book so one has to buy both books at the same time. :D

    PS:
Just got back from a short gaming trip to local casinos. My wife and I did well and guess what, I didn't even see a ploppy split 5s. What is this world coming to?

    We Thank You

We are all here to learn and share information, most of the time its valuable information that is shared here, but sometimes its NOT:joker:

If one of our members wants to share his expertise on why in live play we should consider splitting 5-5 in certain situations we should all listen, because in order to recognize whats good info every once in a while we need to see some BAD info.So then we know the difference between good and bad.

    Thanks from all of us
