If I can get at least one of these clubs to show interest like Barona has, CLubUBT along with UBT will grow even stronger! I would guess the most important thing for Club UBT is the TV show UBT EBJ on CBS. Last years show was sponsored primarily by Bet21 which will likely fold this year. The other sponsor was sharkman dvd which is distributed by a company Big Vision Entertainment a company I see is owned by a guy named Curtis, not the gambler Anthony, who is listed on the net as an executive producer of UBT EBJ TV show. Big Vision also distributes Annie Duke and Phil Helmuth poker DVDs. So, maybe this year Club UBT will replace Bet21. This is a key, IMO, to capturing new members to Club UBT. Getting small card clubs to put up some money in sponsorship isnt effective because the Club UBT needs mass audience to gather mass members.

EBJ World Series This weeks EBJ at Venetian should tell a lot if a EBJ WS is even close to having a chance. So far the events as a live game have been a failure separate Barona that is suspect itself after canceling the next TOC qualifier game. If the Venetian cant yield more than a couple hundred players via the invite/open format it doesnt look good. Barona is paying 1 million for first place at the TOC and if they cant get at least 100 to play there, over and above team UBT, I wouldnt be surprised to see them fold the UBT EBJ sponsorship. Pechanga, a near by competitor of Barona, had an invite / open event of recent that had about twice the players of a UBT Barona game from which they must have at least made the prize pool back in rebuys alone ($300K). If Barona can run a simple BJT event and pay for the game and make loads on high limit gamblers why bother with an EBJ? Anyway, this tourney at Venetian is very important for EBJ IMO. If a player truly loves EBJ I think its prudent to support the game there this weekend. A success at Venetian can open the door to something like a World Series of EBJ.
Greed will kill their opportunities .... The players willing to play BJT are there as amply demonstrated by the turnouts at any well promoted BJT with reasonable entry fees, be it EBJ, TBT or whatever. The 10% or so rake proved to be an attendance spoiler. The prospect of a Club UBT winner having a direct seat at the Barona TOC Final table without UBT adding any money to the prize pool will likely dampen potential participants' enthusiasm for it.
Interesting angle. It's the first time I've heard that point of view from anyone about the Internet qualifier. With all due respect, Orca, I think you're missing something here. In order for UBT to become an absolute monster: 1. It needs TV dollars. 2. In order to get TV dollars, it needs advertisers and sponsors. 3. In order to get advertisers and sponsors, it needs great ratings. 4. In order to get great ratings, it needs Joe and Jane La-Z-Boy tuning in repeatedly. 5. In order to get them tuning in repeatedly, they've gotta have a "hook". The EBJ format was intended to make the game a lot less boring. The Internet qualifier at the final table is the "hook", it gives Joe and Jane someone to cheer for, and will also cause a hefty number of them to visit the website to take a whack at it themselves as they think I can do better than that! If they try the game and like it, they'll tell their friends and will also be more likely to tune in again. This isn't only about tournament blackjack, it's about entertainment. The same scenario happened to poker. The Hole Cards camera made the TV game more interesting to watch, and the Moneymaker Effect made thousands think that they could do it, too.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Moneymaker qualified for a seat in the WSOP event, not a direct seat at the WSOP Final Table. He still had to compete with all other WSOP entrants to get to the Final Table and then for the top prize. Perhaps you misread my post.
Point taken Point taken and acknowledged. However, the fact that he did sit at the final table and eventually win the whole thing is what launched poker into the stratosphere. It showed that Joe Nobody can win something like that, and what aftereffects happen to the tournament itself. I think UBT is trying to create the same buzz for their tournaments.
Greed will kill their opportunities .... Then qualify as many John and Jane Does as UBT can manage for the Barona TOC event, and add their corresponding entry fees to the prize pool. The larger the number of Internet qualifiers at the TOC event in December, the more likely one of them will end up with the top prize. Joe Nobody wins BJT all the time.
