I was there coming back from Paradise's and they didn't have any info for their next one. Just tortured me about the one I missed.
Just that I missed it, and there was a good turn out. I said I wanted to be on the list for all future BJ mailings, and the Promo Crittere sasiad he'd flag me for things...and I added that they are a bit far for me to just come and casually play, so I had to be a hard flag. Dunno if it will stick.
Golden Acorn GA was doing $10,000 tourneys for a $10 entry and $25 rebuy every month, but only drawing about 80 players - so were really tanking it on the money - they tried dropping prize pool down to $5,000, and up[ping entry fee to $25, etc. - but everything they did just drove the number of players downward. When you raise the entry fee, reduce the prize pool, and reduce the ev, you are not going to start attracting more players. Problem is location, one hour drive from San Diego, two hours from Yuma, one hour from El Centro; player base is mainly San Diego, and to get to GA from San Diego, you have to pass Viejas and Seycuan, which are much bigger and nicer. So no market, unless they offer such a high positive ev that they can't make the tournament work. I would expect that they will not be offering tournaments on a regular basis; maybe as a very infrequent promo, but probably not very good ev. Their last few tourneys have been so much for so little that I haven't bothered to come out from Yuma for them.
Saturday 1/24 tourney coming up Since I couldn't get any info or an Invite to Paris' Femme Fatale this weekend, I plan on being at this one. Not sure if anyone else from the SD area will be there as well...hubby has a work issue (major computer shut-down/upgrade), so may only be me. Might be able to talk one other into making the trip...depends on his availability. Richard, will you trek out for this? Pine Tree?
upcoming Golden Acron Touryn Hi Sandy I doubt that I will make it to this tourney. (I was at the last Golden Acorn tourney and did quit well.) Since then I have been going to the Hawaiian Gardens every Sat. tourney. I have to only travel 1/4 as far and 1st place pays twice as much than the current GA tourney. Also, at Hawaiian Gardens, 3 advance from the 1st round, 2 advance from the Semi round, and 3 first round re-buys are available. Chopped pots pay at least $700 to every one at the final table, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd places pay much more. At the present time a free buffet is given to all tournament players. The only draw back I see is that I usually invest $180 plus gasoline in each HG tourney. That isn't as bad as it sounds if you consider the higher transportation expenses and the 8 hours it takes for me to made the round trip to the GA casino. I have finished in 1st place one time so far at HG.
Ok, I'll look for you Richard...and after this weekend's doule $5k header in San Diego (GA and VV), I may try to hit the HG one. Gotta see how I do. I chopped on THursday (4-way) at SY, first time in a long while for me. So that's buying my way in for GA. Thanks for the sum-up Pine Tree. I do prefer multi-advance games...less stress on the ole' brain doing math on chip stacks... I tend to be more focused on the cards and my pile vs. the rest of the table some hands.
You might like the Hawaiian Gardens tournament format Hi Sandy I think you should give the HG tournament a try. Send me a Private Message when you decide to make the trip. I will tell you how to locate the tournament area and give you some tips about registering and getting a seat assignment. I don't want to let the casino in on what I have observed. The HG casino is in a couple of huge "tents" like Casino Pauma. The interior is filled wall to wall with people and gaming tables. It is usually crowded. I don't think much of its decor, but I only go for the BJ Tournaments not to sight seeing. You should go for the free buffet and not eat at the cafe. The tournament has the usual problems with high value chips being hidden in tightly clenched fists or hidden behind a wall of lower value chips, and so on. The tournament director is working on the problems. The casino is using the BJ tournament for on the job training for brand new dealers, so you have to constantly keep monitoring when they count the value of hands and make payoffs. All of the tournament registration personnel are friendly and are making an effort to learn everyone's name. I think that is a nice touch. This casino is serious about its BJ tournaments and is trying to make them stay around for a long time.
Hey Pine Tree, After taking a second place for $1k at Golden Acorn, I think there's a good possibility of my coming up to play. ~Sandy
Golden Acorn Win Hi Sandy Wow! Sounds like that one advance per table was no problem. The players at Hawaiian Gardens will have to make room for one more at their final table.
Yeah, seems like I've managed to outsmart myself on the single-advance...mind you, I also got lucky that Richard failed to cover a possible Blackjack during our shared Semi-final table.... You see, I had a whopping 30 in chips and he and two others had 300+. They were working out their covers, and figured I was out of it. I held back 5 -- Just In Case -- and went in with 25. BJ paid 2:1...the three of them failed their hands as the Dealer made his. Richard couldn't believe he missed his math on covering me....LOL, so off to the Final Table I went.
