    Format

To the best of my knowledge :

Quarterfinal format....table elimination. Not sure re: how many advance, bankroll, etc.,etc..

Will post when I know for sure. Hard to get accurate info. from V.I.P. Hostess.

These $100K tournaments have been played in the past but never open to the public.

  4. Thanks for the heads up. I will have to get on the ball and give the Grand a call. I have been out of town since last Thursday and haven't checked my PO Box since that morning. It sure would be nice to have something from them regarding this tournament sitting in the box. If not, I hope it isn't too late to get registered as a non-invited member of the public.

    I'm there

I registered today. I was told that on-site registration on that Friday is from 3 PM to 10 PM, which is different from the 3 pm to 5 pm mentioned above. If you call, you might want to confirm that detail.

I got the same Friday registration information as Ken.

  7. I checked my PO Box last night and I did indeed have an invite to this tournament. :) I called and registered last night. Here are a few more tidbits of information according to the invite. Registration is from 3-10 on Friday at the East Front entrance and in the small print it says that you "must attend registration on January 28, 2005 to particpate and receive gift and wild card entry".
Tournament action will begin at 10 AM on Saturday with rebuy rounds beginning at 4 PM. Players who do not qualify for the quarter-finals may rebuy for $100.
Tournament action resumes at 11 AM Sunday. Quarter finals begin at 2 PM. Wild card drawings are at 3:45 PM. Semi-finals begin at 4 PM andthe Finals are at 5 PM.
    Note:
"Total of $50,000 guaranteed. Additional prize money based on maximum participation".
Anyway, that is about everything that was on the printed invite. Good Luck to all.

  8. I just wanted to ask if anyone was coming to this event. We have a small group of us coming down to play this tournament and we are just hoping for the best. Most of us have played in a few tournys but we have one friend who is making his tournament debut. If he is as into his beer during the tournament as he was during the simulation rounds we played, you will probably be able to figure out who I am talking about.

He will be the one "Betting it up"

    Good Luck to all.

    I'll be there

Both me and my wife Jan are playing at the Grand, and I know others among the members here who are participating as well.

    Other news items:

A caller this weekend was told the event is full, but to check back in case they open up more spots. There have been some odd reports about this tournament, so I wouldn't assume anything if you're not registered yet. It's worth a phone call to check.

We're checking on the availability of GSN in the sports bar at the Grand. If possible, we hope to get a large group together for World Series of Blackjack on Friday night at 9 PM. I'll be on that show.

My wife and I will be playing too. I called on Friday and got in without a problem, but it could be that there was a rush over the weekend. She did better than the rest of us at our last tournament, played conservative and backed into the winning spot on her last hand and didn't even realize she won. The next round she decided to split 10's for no apparent reason and lost her position as BR1 and her confidence along with it, but overall she did great considering it was her first tourney.

Let us know if you can get GSN there or at another place. We will be arriving between 8 and 9pm, have to get registered, but will be looking for everyone once we settle in.

I will be Gulfport also. Was told that if you have hotel reservations you must check in before 6 or call to arrange for late arrival. :)

My wife and I will be coming down from Minnesota. Looking forward to it.

  13. Sounds great. I am looking forward to the weekend. It will be especially fun watching the WSOB with one of the participants in attendance.

I know this has to be a misprint or a case on bad information but I thought I would share it anyway. I am looking at the latest edition of "Jackpot", which is a local biweekly magazine/newspaper that covers the coast casino scene. The front page article is about the tournament. It states that entants must attend registration from 3-5 PM on Jan 28 to receive the wild card entry and gift. My invite says registration goes until 10PM so I have to guess this info in the paper is inaccurate. I am going to call them later today to try and clear up this discrepancy.

Bad news..it's full....Good news.. we got GSN.

I played at the Gulfport Grand 3-card poker tourney last night (Wednesday) and i was told by 'Liz' at the host office on the west end of the casino that the tourney is totally full. Like Ken said, a tourney this big will certainly have some fallout, so it would be worth a try if you want to get in. And, 3 to 10pm is what I was told by Liz as the registration time.

Also, after talking to many management people who are supposed to be in charge of the TV's in the sports bar, I finally got a straight answer from Mark, the main bartender there. He said he WOULD have GSN on their TV's for us at the bar, and they WILL SHOW IT WITH SOUND. So, if Mark is still employed by the Grand on Friday, we should get the WSOB - week 2.

A lesson learned... always start at the bottom and work your way up.:)

    Thanks Jim

I asked Jim for help in chasing down the details of watching WSOB at the Grand, without realizing how involved that was going to be. Thanks for your perseverance. See ya there!

SORRY I COULDNOT FIND THE GROUP FOR THE FRIDAY NIGHT VIEWING. THAT PLACE HOURLY SESSIIS SO BIG THAT ONE CAN LOSE A KID & NEVER FIND HIM.
FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT WERE NOT THERE, YOU MISSED A LOT OF FUN & SOME WASTED TIME. THERE WERE 432 ENTRIES THAT PLAYED 72 PER SESSION (6/TABLE X12 TABLES) SO IT TOOK 6 HOURLY SESSIONS, & THEN RE-BUYS, LIMITED TO 1 TIME, STARTED WITH ABOUT 160 REGOUGHT FOR $100. RE-BUY PLAYING SESSIONS CARRIED OVER UNTIL SUNDAY A.M.
THEN THE QUARTER FINALS, FOLLOWED BY THE SEMI-FINALS, & FINALS AT 5P.M. WILD CARD DRAWING FOR 12 FOR THE SEMI-FINALS ARE AT 3:30. SSO THERE IS A LOT OF DEAD TIME TO ALLOW TABLE PLAY, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT A TOURNAMENT IS DESIGNED FOR. AND YOU HAD BETTER PLAY OR NEXT TIME THEY MAY NOT HAVE A ROOM FOR YOU. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A PERSON WITH FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE THAT BALLY'S TUNICA EXPECTS AT LEAST 4 HOURS PLAY AT THE $25 TABLES OR 8 HOURS AT THE $10 TABLES. sINCE BALLY'S & GRAND ARE BOTH OWNED BY THE SAME COMPANY, I ASSUME THE EXPECTATIONS MIHGT BE THE SAME EVERYWHERE.
THIS TOURNAMENT WAS A 25 HAND ELIMINATION, $5000 BUYIN WITH $500/5000 MIN/MAX BET.
i THOUGHT I WAS THE WINNER AT THE FIRST TABLE WHEN THE CARDS WERE REALLY FANTASTIC WITH RUNNING COUNT CONSISTENTLY 15 OR MORE. MY FINAL RESULT OF $29,000 WAS NOT A WINNER. GOT BEAT BY $850. THEY USED A GREY CHIP FOR $5000 CHIPS, & THEY WERE VERY HARD TO DISCERN. THE LITTLE LADY WHO TOOK FIRST HAD ONE MORE GREY THAN I REALIZED. WELL, LIVE & LEARN. IT WAS GREAT FUN.
MY RE-BUY CAME DOWN TO THE LAST HAND WITH ONLY 2 OF US LEFT. I WAS SLIGHTLY AKEAD. WE BOTH MADE MAX BETS. HE WAS ON THE BUTTON & MADE MAX BET. I DID LIKEWISE. HE RECEIVED A 6-4 & DOUBLED. I RECEIVED 10-2 & DOUBLED. HE WON HIS DOUBLE, I LOST MINE. BUT IT WAS REALLY FUN & EXCITING.
BILOXI GRAND HAS A TOURNAMENT AT END OF FEBRUARY, SO HOPE TO SEE SOME OF YOU THERE. :) :(

    Chip colors

Springbac, you weren't the only one who couldn't tell a gray chip from a purple and it costing you. Same thing happened to me on final hand. BR1 and I were set up for the final bet and BR3 who was out of it at the count on 20 and only had purple chips ($500) somewhere along the line got a gray chip and I missed it. I failed to hold back enough to cover her low and she snuck in and won the table when I drew a 20, but the dealer busted the table with a blackjack. Saw the same thing happen at another table later, BR3 got a win by $100 because BR1 and BR2 both busted and they forgot BR3. Goes to show how important it really is to know what everyone's chipcount is on the final hand, even the players you think are out.

I think I am going to have to go get some magnifying glasses.

    :)

    Tough chips to see

The Grand's chips were very difficult to distinguish. The black $100 chips tended to be rather gray. The purple $500 chips came in two colors, one of which was dark enough to be confused for black in the shadows. The grey $5000 chips looked just like the most faded of the $100 chips. It was tough.
