I saw on the CALENDAR that the Grand Casino Tunica is having another tournament Feb. 3, 2006. I'm thinking of going but won't know if I'm free for those dates until about Jan. 30, 2006.

Does anyone have a feel for room availability if I book that late? I want to stay in their main hotel near the boat, not the other locations requiring a shuttle to get to the boat.

    Grand hotel choices

    Toolman,

I usually try to stay in the Veranda hotel at the Grand. I think it is the newest of the three hotels. I have never stayed in the hotel next to the casino, but my impression was that it was the oldest of the three hotels in the complex and may not have been updated recently. I may be wrong, but someone else can comment on that.

The shuttle isn't bad, it runs regularly between the hotels and the casino. I would just not try to cut it close in trying to get from the hotel to the casino. I think during most hours it runs on about a ten minute wait between shuttles and it only takes about ten minutes to get from one of the outlying hotels to the casino.

I am not sure that the tournament has ever filled up. They may get around 200 players, but I am not sure what they their limit is. Since the entry fee is $500 I don't think you will have to much trouble registering late.

I've stayed at the Grand Hotel (next to the casino), and the Terrace. The rooms are nicer at the Terrace, but the shuttle is a bother. Here's a hint I noticed last time I was there. If you must choose between Terrace and Veranda, choose Terrace for this reason. Sometimes the shuttle fills up with people on the first stop at Terrace, and the people waiting at the Veranda are forced to wait for another bus.

I've also noticed that the Grand Hotel rooms are more closely guarded by the hosts. If they're close to full, you'll need significant play to be given a room casino-side.

    Ken's right

Your right Ken, I got the Terrace and Veranda mixed up. We usually stay in the Terrace. It is the first stop on the loop from the casino and I have also seen times when the bus was full when it got to the Veranda and could not take all people waiting there. Usually the drivers are good about notifying their dispatch when that happens and another bus is put in the system if available.

You can check out pictures of the rooms at their website (link from the event calendar). I think the picture of the casino hotel room is either dated or maybe it still looks this way.

    Good Info

Thanks for the info from both of you. I'm going to print a hard copy so I'll have it for future use. Maybe I'll see one or both of you there in Feb.

    Grand format

The strictly elimination format at the Grand is different from the hybrid played at the other casinos in Tunica. I think you will like playing there. They have a nice spread Friday night for registration (largest shrimp around) and you will see the same people there every tournament, so it is like coming home....

The tournament is well run. They used to have problems when they let rebuys go to long and pushed second round play into the evening on Saturday instead of finishing at a reasonable hour, but that has been a couple of tournaments ago, so maybe they have fixed that now.

Good luck. I am sure the St Louis Mafia will be out in force trying to win back to back tournaments. I don't know of anyone who has won there twice, so at least the odds favor you.

    :D

    Remember me?

    ptaylorcpa:

You talk as if I never played there. The GRAND CASINO TUNICA is where we originally met during their Sept., 2005 tournament. Did I jog a memory?

I guess dementia hits all ages. :joker:

    Selective memory

    Tim,

I remember now meeting you in Tunica. Didn't remember it being at the Grand, but thinking on it some more I think you are right. Deb says I have selective memory.

When does the last round usually end?

The last day is supposed to be Sunday, Feb 5. I just want to get an approximate time to arrange transportation should I decide to participate in it. Thx!

    Code Number?

I called to try and get into the Grand Tourney but they said you have to have a code on your invitation to get free rooms...is that true? I have no codes or invites.

    Grand event

I haven't seen anything yet on the Grand other than the post in the events calender, so I am not sure what is going on. In the past they were open events and the $500 entry fee included two nights plus a reception party.

I know the last major at the Gold Strike was turned into an invite only. I am wondering if maybe the Grand is going to be an invite only versus an open event?

    Grand

Before the last Grand major, I had someone tell me that as well, when it wasn't true. I had to bounce around to several different people before I found someone who knew what was going on.

I just talked to VIP Services at the Grand, and they assured me that the tournament is open, and you were given mistaken information. The $500.00 fee does include a 2 night stay in one of their hotels. There is a code on some invitations that gives a reduced buy-in from the $500.00 entry fee, but it has nothing to do with getting free rooms. The tournament is an open tournament and not an invitational.

    Finally !!

Ya'll were right.... it's who you talk to. It turns out the code the other girl was talking about is the code THEY must enter into the system to register you in the tourney. Anyway, talk to Lethesica (not misspelled) to get entered. The Grand hosts are also setting up rooms for the Sheriton tourney, and it works the same way. I'm in both, and I hope to see some of you there.

    Thanks for the help.

    Tournament Feb 3

I have just talked with Kathryn in VIP Services to receive clarification on the tournament by in and coverage. The tournament is open to the public for a $500 buy in, & this does not include a room. If you received a card in the mail with the code name "Blackjack" on it your buyin is $400, and it DOES include a room for TWO NIGHTS.
I will be receiving all of the rules from them today & will post an update ASAP. but basically the tourney is ELIMINATION. Max 280 enteries, 1st round is 7 people per table with 2 advancing to 3rd round. Second round is $250 re-buy with a maximum of 18 advancing to 3rd round.
    More later. :)

    this is getting funny!

I just reaffirmed that I am in the tournament with 2 free nights. My play would not dictate any major consideration from large play. I talked to Lathesica at the host office.
