I'm watching the show on GSN and see that everyone is following basic strategy even though I know some of them are counting cards. my question is , then, is how neccessary is card counting? can one be successful in a tournament(or just regular play) with just relying on basic strategy?

    Thanks

    tournament counting

in tournaments chip count is much more important than card counting, however ,i like to count cards, mainly to time my large catch up bets. i usually start a progession with 1/7,1/3 or just bet max when the count is high rather low if possible (depending on the chip count of my competitors). the tournaments i play in pay 2to1 for a bj so if you hit one with a large bet it can be a huge payoff
