With Kenny Einiger outstanding football handicapping football picks from last year he has been challenged by Marvin Ornstien (Aka) Mr O to a season long contest.

The each will pick one game per week and the one with the best overall record will be declared the winner

There is an actual wager between the two players

Kenny will be giving out his picks every Thursday night on the " Be In Action" radio show.

Mr O wants to wait until Saturday to make his selection. It will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

And we all thought that Mr. O took a lot of time to play his hand in a tournament.

    Week # 1 picks

    Kenny Jets + 3

    Mr O Ind -3

    I was out of town

I was in Vegas last week so no picks last week.

I did hit a small 6 team parlay for $5 (I won $200 off of it).

I like to play $20 to $30 worth of $5 parlays while I'm in Vegas with 6 to 12 teams. I know they say they're sucker bets but I hit one most everytime I 'm out there.

The one I hit was a 6 team first half bet on NFL.

I'll put out my picks next week.

    Since I was asked...

I'll put a 7* pick on West Virgina tonight -16 over Maryland in NCAAF and for Sundays NFL I'll go with 5* Miami -6 over Buffalo.

Hey Rick this thread was intended to keep a running account of Kenny Einiger vs. Marvin Ornstein season long football wager that is being held on the "Be In Action" Radio Show on Thursday nights at 6 PM Pacific Time.

I was under the assumption that there was a thread called Ricks Picks for you to list your picks.

Its to late for you to join in on this bet as they both had winning picks last week

Both Kenny and Marvin won their selections from last week

So the seson series is tied at 2-2

Since they will not be a live broadcast of "Be In Action" radio show for the next 2 weeks. Re runs will air, I will attempt to post their picks from Aruba.

That is if I can drag myself off the beach ;)

Over all for the season Kenny's picks on the radio show is 5-0

He had 3 pre seaon picks

    2 Weeks OFF

Kenny and Marvin have both agreed to suspend their football contest for the next 2 weekends as most of us will be out of the country in Aruba trying to become TV stars.

The contest will resume on the Weekend of Oct 7-8

Kenny and I will be live on the air on Oct 5 with all in-dept report of the UBT Tournaments that were held in Aruba

Don't forget to tune in Thursday night at 6PM Pacific Time

    Too Bad

I've been using their picks for my free play - I've actually been quite happy with the results :). (4-0) Thanks to both of you and good luck in Aruba.

    I'm interested

I have no idea about sports betting so could someone explain to me what the numbers mean next to the picks?

    Cheers

    Thanks Joep

I might have to start to take an interest in American sports. Basically if the figure is positive the team is a underdog and vice versa? Does a bookie determine these spreads? If so I guess you shop around for the most favourable. What's they payout and where do you place these bets? Am I wrong in saying that it's technically illigal in the US to place this sort of bet? Do you bet online?

    Cheers

We'll make you a degenerate gambler yet.

    Yep.

    I think they prefer 'oddsmaker'.

Yep, and it's always changing depending upon the amount of action on either side.

If you bet acoording to the spread, that's a straight wager minus a little juice usually. There's also moneyline betting which gives higher payouts for dogs and lower payouts for favorites. No spread involved on those.

Illegal most places, but not all.

    Plenty of online sportsbooks.

Hell from what I hear, not far from you over in Ireland, there's a sportsbook on every corner. That has to be interesting.

    Spread betting

Spread betting is very popular (and risky) in the UK as is betting on sports but this particular type of sports bet seems to be US specific, or at least not a typical type of betting in the UK. I say this with almost no knowledge of the sports gambling industry in the UK so I could be miles of the mark.

Thanks for the tips though, I shall investigate further...

    Cheers

Indeed. I think the spread-betting equivalent of the 'Giants + 3' bet would be for a bookie to offer a range that they think the points difference will be in (say -3 to +1). Punters can then choose to 'buy' or 'sell' this proposition at £N per point. It's the gambling equivalent of a futures market, the potential losses are enormous if there is a freak result.

In fact you can bet on many things - including financial markets - in this way and, I think, thus avoid paying tax on the profits of your 'investments'.

It seems like almost anything can be bet on, with scope for some occasionally amusing scams to be perpetrated. There was an occasion when a football match (soccer game, in American :)) kicked off and a player booted the ball straight out of play, for no apparent reason. It later transpired that bookies were offering a spread on the time of the first throw-in!

    Which American Sport?

If I were to follow a US sport what would you all recommend. My preference is for Basketball as I actually enjoy watching it and I just about understand it. American Football I don't really get and it's the same for Baseball really so I suppose I've answered my own question! Actually I forgot about Ice Hockey, but again, I don't think its me really. What resources are available to me in the UK to help me research and understand this basketball?

    Cheers
