Nearly conned

There are still many good deals to be had, in terms of overlays or low vigs, but there also seem to be some deliberate attempts to exploit people who do not think in such terms, or even to deceive the people who do.

I nearly fell for a particularly brazen example today at GameAccount. I happened to be online and noticed a "£100 added" tournament in the lobby, restricted to 16 players, with a £10 entry fee.

I quickly signed up, before it became full, and returned a few minutes before it was due to start. By pure luck I happened to notice the awful truth, just in time to unregister -

The £10 was treated as £2+£8. £2 to the prize pool, £8 to the house!

So the overall prize pool with 16 players was £132, making it the equivalent of £8.25 + £1.75, or a massive 21% vig.

I am not at all impressed by these tactics!

(Just needed to get that off my chest. :))

    Weird stuff.

I just looked at the description for the £5 added tournaments.

    Buy-in + fee: £1 + £1

Description says : We kick-start with two and a half buy-ins. We then add half of each entry fee into the pot.

    How nice!

    Yeah,

They've been running those for some time. It's the same basic principle: if close to the minimum number of players register, then it's a good deal for the players, but otherwise it is terrible.

This one-off tournament was just a more extreme version. And the "£100-added" headline nearly caught me out. Always read the small print!
