Player of the Year

This seems the most logical board to post this -- why don't we have a 'Player of the Year' competition annually, the same way CardPlayer.com has for the Poker world? Since blackjack tournaments have become more and more popular & publicized over the past few years, it seems like a natural evolution.

We'd need to decide a criteria for determining 'eligible' tournaments, and then how many POY points to assign each finishing player. My suggestion would be all international tourneys that pay 1st place a minimum prize -- lets say $10,000 or higher to start (This will make it easier to track results). Then we assign more or less POY points using this same criteria -- a first place win in the Million Dollar II would be significantly higher than a first place win in the World Series of Blackjack (since top prize is ten times greater at the MD II). Then we assign points to descending final table winners, in rank with $$$ winnings. --Although this could be tricky for Winner Take All events, or ones in which 1st place prize money is ridiculously higher than the other finishers.

Has anything like this been attempted before in our community? It seems like we've got the technology to do this, and a board like this would be a natural place to create such an icon.

    Thoughts?

    Format already made up

Hollywood already ahead of you I have been working on this type of format for sometime. Also it has to be run as a membership not individually as being done now. Events like the WSOB and other VIP type events could not be counted in over all standings since they are not OPEN for all. With my concept only sanctioned events would count.

Interesting point about this is the casinos would have to be willing to open their tournaments up to all the players to be a sanctioned event. Players who are barred would have to be allowed back to the casino (for tournament play only). There would be exceptions for cheating, unruly conduct, or peeing on roulette wheels, (now I'm just being an ASH...lol).

My format is for internation tournaments as well, I am currently working on on-line blackjack tournaments (elimination style) and on-line satellite events for the bigger tournaments such as the Million Dollar III (if they have it).

I have already talked to players from Canada, Europe, and Australia. They all seem excited about bring the most popular casino table game to the same type of prize money tournaments as poker.

    Good Idea, Hollywood!

I think this site is a good opportunity to score players, so the last word is Ken's.

You're absolutely right, $10,000 is the min. first prize to consider particular tournament.

The number of players is also very important factor since it might be 10 competing for $100,000 first prize or 200 for $75.000.

Invitational tournaments are weaker than open ones, so we need to have a tournament rating - coefficient of difficulty (based on opinion of all of us).

So, I would offer something like this:

    R= C x N x Prize x 1/Place

    R - Rate, C - coefficient of difficulty, N - number of players

Then we should give some weights (Wi) (based on importancy) to all this components in the formula. Again all of us should participate in that process.
I think the score should be given only to the finalists, otherwize just 0.

    Our formula will look like:

    (W1 x C) x (W2 x N) x (W3 x Pr) x (W4 x 1/Pl), where W1+W2+W3+W4 = 1

I'd like to see some comments posted, so we can go on.

The last word? That's "Where do I sign up?"

Excellent idea, and I'm sure it'll be popular with the players. The challenge will be getting any cooperation at all with the casinos. I'm afraid TXTour's idea of requiring them to allow all players to participate is unrealistic.

But, consider the resources I have at my disposal available for this project. Any infrastructure that I can provide will be provided.
