It's good to see events popping up in West Virginia, but I do hope they'll reconsider the payout percentage. If a player wants to buy-in for the final event at a cost of $550, they're only receiving $357 in value (admittedly ignoring the value of the trip). That's a pretty steep vig for the house to keep.

The weekly events have an entry fee of $50+$25 which is again no bargain. It will be interesting to see how well this event is supported by the players.

If anyone attends, please give us a trip report.

Same line of thought I had about this one. Although this sort of thing should be the future of BJT's - the house making a profit from the tournament itself without depending on player's side action - the vig here is mighty steep.

Deb and I were admittedly somewhat excited to see this series of BJT's show up since it's not that far from us. Almost the same driving time as St. Ignace, believe it or not! This one is awfully top-loaded, though, and coupled with the steep vig and the necessity of making the final table merely to get your entry fee back, it's not that attractive to us. If this is their first foray into hosting BJT's, we can hope they do have enough success to feel encouraged to tweak it a bit.

So let's explore this for a minute. Players want open tournaments BUT without having to give the casino any side action. That's basically most players' attitude. So the real question is how much vig is reasonable.

In this case, let's assume the vig is the same whether the player won his seat or pays the $550. So we have 112 * ($550 - $357) = $21,616 vig. Way too high the players say. OK, if the vig is $50 per player, the vig is $5,600. But is it a smart business decision to run a tournament for a gross profit of only $5,600 considering how much a casino makes in a normal day? Is running a tournament for a gross profit of $5,600 worth the time, effort, and expense?  On the other hand a gross profit of about $20,000 may be worthwhile. Without side action, what's a casino to do? Don't forget, a casino is a for profit organization.

So, assuming the casino gets no side action from the tournament players, what is a right balance if one were the casino manager?

    Side action

Is not giving side action really that prevalent? I realize there are people that give none but majority of posters here seem to do there part.

For "open" BJTs, YOU BETCHA. Just think back how much side action was given to the Ho-Chunk when they ran their tournaments. Maybe that's why that event is gone (ya, I know about the so called management thing but I don't buy it). Also, ask Txtourplayer about side action at the Tropacana when he held a TBJPA event. And what about the Winstar. I wasn't there but from what I heard and read here, many players came into town "just in time " to play the tournament then left like their pants were on fire as soon as they were eliminated.

    Side action

Ignace now demands side action or you will not be given a slot, as most now know.

As I see it the casino needs to make a profit especially when they offer packages as Kewadin does. Darn good packages too:)

Besides, *great* BJT players should not fear putting their own, real money, on the line to play against the house, in fact they should welcome the opportunity. Unless of course the real money games are so poor as to be unbeatable by a skilled BJ player.

Not to get off the original purpose of this thread, but I'm curious. I haven't played at St. Ignace for over 2 years. Are you saying I can't play the "open" BJT since I don't have a recent history of action at that casino? If that's the case, then it's not really "open" any more.

They are now very fussy. You may be able to get a spot but not at the new casino hotel. They now do this for all tourneys, check your rated play and then they decide.

They really have some great packages and just want the players to give them a fair amount of action and not just tourney action and then get the free rooms, gifts, food, drawings. It helps to keep the price of the tourneys down and insures the continued offerings of tourneys.:)

This is what I've been preaching for years. You, my friend, understand. If everyone had your attitude then there would be a lot more open events. We, the BJTers, have forced casinos to go to invite only BJTs or no BJTs at all. Yes, we created our own mess.

Hello, the wife and I played this tourny on a Wednesday a few weeks ago. It's a 3 hr trip for us, but a nice getaway as we stayed over and did play BJ most of the night. Walked away about even. Did not progress past the first round, and bought back in the allowed 1 time. I thought a decent small event, maybe a total of 100 players that night. I do plan to hit this again in mid October.
