Okay never having played in a tournament please excuse my complete an utter newbieness. But i was wondering how long does a player have to place a bet? Is there a time limit? Is it meant to be instantaneous? Presumbly for you guys to go through the maths and to avoid making costly mistakes requires at least some time.

Actually it is a good question. There are no dumb questions here, unless it is me asking. :)

Most tournaments say they have a time limit to make a bet and a time limit on deciding to hit or stand. It is always spelled out in the rules, so be sure to read the rules before playing.

Sometimes they enforce the time strictly, other times they may warn you if you are to slow. This last tournament I played in the rule was 10 seconds, which isn't a whole lot of time, but in most cases they were flexible. They usually gave warnings to slow players before making you stand or putting in a minimum bet for you.

    Different limits at different casinos

Most tournaments have a rule limiting the time a player has to make a decision. Sometimes these rules are enforced strictly, but more commonly they are just used as a guideline.

Typically, you can expect to be allowed 1 to 2 minutes to make a decision near the end of a round. More liberal tournaments may allow as much as 5 minutes, while some tournaments attempt to enforce a 10 second rule.

Watching how the time rule is applied is one of the things I like to do if I can watch a round of an event before I have to play. It helps to know how far you can push the actual wording of the rule without getting into trouble.

On the global player web site, in tournament mode they have a line that goes down showing how much time you have to make a bet or a decision on a hand. I forget how long it is, but it maybe around 30 seconds. I believe the rule is if you don't make a bet in the maximum time, then it puts a minimum bet in for you. If you don't decide on what to do with your hand, it assumes you stand and goes on.

Someone correct me if that is not right.

One of the best ways to learn about tournament play is to download the global player software and go online during a tournament and just watch the play. You don't have to deposit any money to join.
