A few days ago an ex-Russian spy, Alexander Litvinenko died in London after being poisoned with the radioactive substance Polonium 210. This substance was believed to have been introduced into his food when he met a contact at a restaurant, possibly in aerosol form. The contact had information about to the recent assassination of a female Russian journalist which Litvinenko was investigating.

Alexander Litvinenko was a vocal critic of Putin and has accused him of many wrong-doings including the theatre siege in Moscow a few years back. It is widely believed that the murder was carried out by the FSB (what the KGB became) either with or without Kremlin sanction. Although it would seem incredible that Putin himself ordered the killing recent legislation in Russia has meant that it is much easier for the FSB to order assassinations overseas without sanction from above. Another probably more likely scenario is that a rogue FSB unit were involved who wanted to discredit Putin by leaving such an obvious trail back to him. It's likely we will never know who did this because as Alexander Litvinenko said himself, the FSB are very, very good at what they do.

The Polonium itself is commonly used as part of the trigger for nuclear weapons and emits very powerful and destructive alpha particles. Once ingested death is certain, slow and very, very painful. It's as if a nuclear weapon had gone off inside him!

Just wondered whether this was being reported in the US and if so what sort of coverage it's getting. To me it brings back memories of The Cold War when you knew exactly who your enemies were ;) !

Yes, this story is being covered extensively here in the US. Probably not as extensively as in the UK but it is making headlines here.

Reach, this news source deals with news that isnt news yet, so to say they are so far in front of the news that is dealt by standard liberal media. Drudge is actually starting to lay off the Spy event. It is amazing tho how front running he is.

    Accusations

Barmey, are you accusing me of reading the liberal media? Well your right, I love it. Their news is so much nicer than the stuff you get in those horrible right-wing papers. Actually the 3 links probably reflect the spectrum of media in the UK. The Telegraph on the right, BBC in the middle-ish and The Guardian on the left. It's funny but one of the papers over here that is arguably the most right-wing, knee-jerk of them all, The Daily Mail, was the first website that I was hyperlinked to from your link. String 'em up I say!!!!

If you are using your primary source of news as BBC then yes it is a accusation! LOLOLOL Not really. The only right wing news paper here in USA is the Wall Street Journal which represents the investment class a right wing group. The media on prime TV CBS ABC and NBC are left leaning. But once you get to cable you enter a right leaning TV posture lead by way of number one FOX. If you do watch FOX they do offer debate from both sides tho. The liberal news I like and respect is CBC from Canada. Canada is a socialist like country but the news is pretty good and level. I read my local paper for local action but do get most of my news from www.Drudgereport.com. Drudge is slightly right leaning which fits me and the news is front running. Its funny most of the radios stations seem to be using drudge now a-days.

    Relative

I must admit I find it hard to believe you have only 1 right-leaning newspaper in the US. I'm not totally au fair with American media but I do watch The Daily Show most days and find it informative and funny. I've also caught some stuff by Stephen Colbert which I found hilarious. He comes over right-wing but it's very tongue in cheek. Did you see his speech at The White House Correspondents Dinner? Unbelievably funny. The man has balls!

    You mean...

...they aren't real journalists or reproters on The Daily Show????? I'm shocked! Jon Stewart and his team do critique the mainstream US media quite well though and I find his satirical viewpoint quite informative. We Brits do enjoy a bit of satire.

    The scary thing about

John Stewart is his pull when it comes to voters age 18-25 as his show can be a prime "news" source for them. I bet he hasnt made any funny about Charles Rangel, a top democrat law maker, ramping a draft. If it werent for the draft the voting age should be at least 21....
