    No specific answer

Unlike poker, there is no "rake" structure in BJ tournaments and how the casinos handle "buy ins" vary widely. Some are invitational with no buy in, some are a buy in + a charge that goes to cover expenses, some are a buy in with all the entry fees returned in prizes, some are buy in + an added amount from the casino to increase the prize pool, etc. The point is that you have to analyze the prize structure for each tournament you plan to enter to see if it's a good deal or not.

As to how the casinos make their money, they depend on "side action" from the additional players they bring in as a result of holding the tournament. This side action can be table games or slots. Also they expect that some of the tournament players will give additional action during non tournament times to "get in good" with the casino which can result in more "comped" entries into tournaments.

    In a nutshell - it's a mess.

So true. And while I thought and hoped there would be pressure to standardize tournaments, the last ten hits in the forehead with the two by four made me realize that'll never happen. And the new events(for TV) and or traveling leagues are compounding the analysis as well as creating adjustments in strategy and approach.

Just shows to goya there's more to a tournament than just playing blackjack.

Perhaps not all bad for the player who scopes it out properly.
