    Excitement

What suspense!!! What excitement!!! Only one thing I can think of can beat this. I'm planning on painting my laundry room tomorrow. Can't wait to watch the paint dry!!!

    Commentary

As per usual this year, the commentary had plenty of mistakes. Am I wrong, or did they say John Payne's max bet after Henry was eliminated was the first of the night? Of course that's not true because Henry had made one in a previous hand.

I was really rooting for Erica in this round, but Deanna would have no part of it. :(

    Comeback

I think the only excitement offered was the comeback that Jamie made to have a shot at the end. If you notice in several of the shows the winner or runner up came from almost busting to finish strong. Just shows you have to get the cards to win. I think they noted that Erica only won 4 hands.

Ken, can you post the players in the semifinals to let us know who is playing on which dates?

That's the problem with multi-elimination format

This is why I am not crazy about in the new (made for TV) muliti-elimination blackjack tournament formats. If a player starts out slow or has an early run of bad cards they are SCREWED! In a normal elimination or even accumulative, or hybrid formats a player who starts out bad at least is given a chance to recover and win the table.

Don't get me wrong I liked playing in WSOB and UBT and hopefully I will have the chance to play in both again, but I'm old fashion I guess, I perfer the old single elimination with two advance format best of all.

    Tough cards

Yeah, that's the stat they quoted. She did remarkably well to have only have won 4 hands. Let that be a lesson to all of those folks that think you can't lose 10 hands in a row!

    Shotgun last nights game

I think the primary strategy for this elimination game is a shotgun approach. Play basic strategy or wing it and then shotgun it out when the KOs are near. The best technical strategy is the surrender use. Talking about not using card playing skills, the guy who won said he didnt even know/use basic strategy! Im just not catching where this WSOB will draw in non players. I guess it remains to be seen, with UBT, if celeb invite plants can draw in viwers and add excitement.

    Wild Card

I Guess The Wild Card Game (name) Is Correct-i Am Surprised At The Wild Play And WILD Bets In The Early Hands

  9. John Payne qualified down here at my local casino. I am pretty sure any statements of his about knowing basic strategy is an attempt to throw off his future competitors. The less predictable you are, the less your opponents can anticipate your moves when they have to play first.

But then again, who knows for sure.

I have to admit I have been thrown off most every week so far over some of the bets I've seen...LOL

You know, I thought I heard that too, but then I thought maybe he just said that it was John Payne's first max bet of the night. If somebody has it on tape or DVD/DVR, maybe they could check it? (It'll be on repeats too, so I suppose that's an option for checking also.)

    Sorry, no search

I have it on TIVO and normally I am more than happy to help out a fellow member if it contributes to their education. But damn, asking to relive this episode. That's something no human should be forced to do. That falls under the category of cruel and unusual whatever.

    Commentary

Personally I dont pay much attention to the two talking heads that do commentary on the WSOB. Thinking about it, tho, makes me realize a very important aspect of the TV presentation. Poker on Travel Channel is commentated so well. Im feeling a little stupid right now because I cant remember the guys names besides one was on 8 is enough, but they do a kick ass job. When I watch poker on ESPN or wherever it just isnt as good. It doesnt only take a fine knowledge of the game to present a good viewer show, it takes personality. Is JoeP strikingly handsome with a gift of charm? Nail it Joe . LOLOL

    8 is enough

That was his father that was on "8 is enough". Vince Van Patton (spelling?) is the name you are looking for. Dick Van Patton was on "8 is enough". Is this site educational or what?:D

    It's very simple

they need to split this up into two events. They need to have a "professional event" which is invitational only and will feature the best of the best and then have an "amatuer event" which consists of all qualifiers. I think this would work much better than everyone trying to pretend that the guy who doesn't know basic blackjack strategy and people who are in their first tournaments are the best in the world. (Hey that guy won six mil at a slot he MUST be good!). They could run the amatuer event and give away a nice prize and show that anyone can get there, but then at the same time show the pros and be like "alright THIS is how it's done!" That way all parties involved are good, you get more people in, more TV, and I think better ratings. I'd rather watch a bunch of people whom I know have no clue they're doing and hearing the commentators suggest better plays than watch a bunch of people who don't know what they're doing and listen to the announcers try to convince me that I couldn't beat those schmucks on any given day of the week.

    What if UBT is rubbish?

As a UK resident I haven't yet seen and may never see WSOB 2006. It does concern me though that I have only seen negative posts about it. Obviously posters on this forum as players/experts/purists will be especially tricky to please but is it really all that bad? What have the reviews adn viewing figures been like? Has the "general public" enjoyed or even watched the series?

Can anybody summarise what is wrong with the WSOBJ? Gimmmicks alledgedly reducing skill? Wrong players? Poor commentary? Poor production? Wrong people winning?

You think you've got it bad. I was scanning the TV pages when I noticed a program called "Showbiz Blackjack" on the UK's Challenge Channel. On Challenge we get the UPT, WPT, WSOP, UFC (Yeeeaahhh!) and have had in the past Celebrity Blackjack, which funnily enough is what initially got me interested in TBJ. I expected a UK version of Celebrity and sure enough that's what I got. But worse. Not only were they using UK rules (No hole card, DD on 9,10 & 11 only, Insurance on BJ only, no splitting of 4, 5 or 10, poking knitting needles in your eyes) but also gimmicks like Trust or Bust where your opponents told you what to do with your unseen cards. Not only that there was no betting order or button and everybody just chucked their chips in simultaneously completely destroying one of the main skill elements! I suppose I should have not expected any better and shall of course be watching it religeously every week just so I can go "what ARE they doing?" and "that's not BS you IDIOT!". Surrender Trap; what's that? At least the dealer had good hair.

    Cheers

glad to hear this dealer has good hair at least ;) but tell me, does he/she talk any smack to the contestants?

What no Celeb BJ Series 3.....!!!!!!!???????

As I said, I'm indebted to CBJ because it was a chance viewing of that show that led me to become a bjt.com forum botherer! I'm sure alot of other people are also glad I happened upon it ;) !! I didn't know who half the celebs were but the reason I stopped my channel surfing when I got to CBJ was because I did recognise Munch from Homicide/L&O. So no more CBJ then? Shame, I enjoyed it.

Showbiz BJ is not even in the same league as CBJ. It really is disappointingly P*ss poor!!! Watching Z list celebs playing bad TBJ badly is unfortunately the best there is at the moment.

As for the dealer unfortunately she does not "talk any smack" to the contestants but the thought of her actually smacking them would add another dimension to the show that may raise it out of tedium.

    Cheers

Ps. Your hair is good too Hollywood, but Joep's is the best in TBJ!
