Received my mailed invitation yesterday so I doubt it.

I called Westgate to enter about a half hour ago and was told it's been cancelled.

If anyone gets a reason, I know we're all ears. Especially those of us from the mid-West who booked flights that can't be cancelled.

I just spoke with a senior management person at Westgate. He wasn't sure exactly why it was cancelled, but said it might be because a new management team was coming in on June 1 and wanted to "start from scratch". As far as flights, Southwest Airlines is by far the best carrier to use for Las Vegas. Cancelled reservations are either refundable or the funds held for future use... not forfeited.

    Dakota: Yeah....But....
Those SW fares that are not forfeitable are fly "anytime " fares.. which are just a tad under the other major carriers "best" price. Booking a month or two in advance,(even SW) can produce better fares. An Allegiant purchase well in advance can offer significant savings. And Allegiant flies out of many Midwest markets direct to Vegas, offering a more convenient option. Allegiant offers "insurance" for change of plans. Just one more in a series of industry "add-on." The major point in all this is achieving the best equity for the opportunity. For non Vegas playas, flight cost, room accommodations, comps, entry fee and payout all matter. Planning ahead for the best opportunity given there may be conflicting events is just as much a part of one's strategy.
Dwindling attendance of BJ tourneys may not be so much a death knell to properties as inconsistencies in scheduling, haphazard cancellations(after extended promotion) or just outright dropping of long held events. Westgate is not the only Vegas property to cancel an event after advance promotion. It's almost a trend. One that makes it difficult for a Midwesterner, let alone anyone other than a Vegas resident to even consider signing up for one. That's hardly conducive to attracting new playas to a venue.

Oddly enough, just yesterday I got a mailer from Westgate containing an invitation to this BJT. Guess I'll pass, eh?

Fortunately, I had not bought my travel. I would not have been pleased.

Noman, your SWA information is not quite correct. None of their fares are forfeitble. The "anytime" and "senior" fares are refundable, while funds from cancelled "Wanna Get Away" fares are held for future use. You're certainly correct that planning ahead always helps. When planning far ahead, if I don't know the exact round schedule for a tournament (especially the final table time), I book 2 return flights. I use the one that fits the tournament schedule and cancel the other one. Cancellation only needs to be up to 10 minutes before the flight time, although several hours is generally easy. No charge for cancelling a flight or changing a flight (other than any increased cost of the new flight fare). If there are conflicting events anywhere in the country and I don't have enough current information to make a choice, I book flights early for both so I don't end up making last minute, expensive reservations. Then, when I do make a choice, I cancel the flights not needed.

I called them, when I saw here that it was cancelled. My $279 entry fee was credited back to my card. I am still going to go, and play in a few smaller tournaments on those days. I see there are two at the Orleans that weekend, and some other ones around town. Not staying at the Westgate, though.

I'm on Allegiant which is the cheapest trip to Vegas I've found. I didn't buy insurance and I'm pretty irritated that they cancelled. First it was Tama, then Kewadin. In an effort to PU tournaments to replace these, I decided to PU the Westgate thinking it was a safe bet....
Like Jonny, I'm still going and playing a couple of smaller tourneys and get in some table play. BUT, I wouldn't have flown to Vegas to do this. Just making the best of a bad situation. Anyone ever heard of The Golden Nugget canceling?? This is a pricy tourney, but good prize $.

I haven't received notice or refund, just heard from Billy via Jonny that it was canceled.

I've never heard of this happening. Yes, it is pricey but they pay semi-finalists and making the final table insures a good payday. In addition, you can choose to take your final table prize in slot/VP credits or table game match play chips (the good kind!).

Last time at GN (February), they said no free play, either cash or chips. You can get the chips in any nominations you choose.
