    Tournaments vs regular table play

Just remember we are going there for the tournament (if we get to hold it at the Gold Nugget).

While it is better that you stay and play there it is not required for this type of tournament (since we are playing an entry fee). Now if it was a VIP event yes you would want to give them 4 hours per day avg.

Don't let your mind play games with you. Get over what has happen in the passed on the regular tables and go there with the the right mind set to advance and possibly win the monthly and perhaps the final tournament.

I wasn't crazy about several casinos because of their regular table games, but after winning their tournaments it makes you feel a lot better about that casino...LOL.

I promise you this who ever wins the 2 million tournament will start liking the Golden Nugget (if held there) a lot more then they did before...LOL.

Re Prize Money as taxable income

My accountant advises me that any prize money won in a tournament is considered by IRS as taxable income, in the same way that a table win during regular casino play of $500 would be considered taxable income. Of course, in the latter instance, IRS will not be "notified" of the player's win. However, even in qualifying tournaments, if a player wins a prize sufficiently larger than the entry fee, the casino is bound to report the payout. I know that at the Hilton, they required all of the seven finalists in May to provide social security numbers. I don't know if they did that for any of the finalists during the qualifying tournaments - I qualified by making it to the semis in the Dec. '04 tournament, so I just got my $1,000 back in that one.

    Pokernut?

You said you won a seat at the WSOP this year, how and where do you win it? Did you play in it or sell your seat? If you played how did you do?

    TXtourplayer:
Thanks for the words of encouragement. Just one piece of clearification. No matter where a tournament is held, it (the tournament) gets my full and undivided attention. The surroundings don't matter. I am there to win the gold and I stay focused on that.

My comments about the Nugget were just my opinion. Every player has their favorate casinos and those that they dislike. I'm glad to see you understand my opinion. DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS. That's part of what makes America great.

I'll see you at the Stardust this Sunday. Remember what I said before - if you have a choice of seats, sit to my right. :D

As someone keeps saying: LOL

    May not be there

Toolman I may not be at the Dust this weekend. I've been gone so much I am thinking about taking a break this week.

Looking at the $340 airfare, $375 entry, $600 buy-in and I'm out $1,315 just for starters and that is only going out for only one tournament.

If I don't show up good luck and let us know how you do.

Tex-I won my seat at the Horseshoe in asuper-satellite in Tunica last Jan, I should have sold my seat as I went out before the bubble. I wonder how many of this sites players will be coming to Tunica for Harrah's WSOP circuit at the Grand next month? Wonder why Bj can not get the players to fill 12 tourneys in 2 weeks with entry fees from $300 to $10,000 with satellites daily? And in Jan. the Grand will again host Harrah's WSOP circuit and the Gold Strike will host the World Poker Open at the same time, 24 Tourneys in a 3 week period, talk about Poker Heaven. I think if Bj tourneys tried this and spread the money farther down the ladder there would be more BJ tourney players, just as you said you might not go due tothe cost of airfare for one tourney. Since you are a tourney director, why don't you try this, Texas would be a good central location?

    Been trying

I have been trying to hold big tournaments in Texas for years now. Seems like only illegal poker tournaments are allowed here...LOL.

I just need to find out who needs to get paid so I can host some events without any trouble. Either that or find some lawyers and judges here that like to play blackjack tournaments (like the ones who run the illegal poker tournaments here).

I wonder why it is illegal to host a poker (or blackjack) tournament in Texas unless your a lawyer or judge? MMM sure seems funny to me.

Whats really funny is how they don't follow any part of the Texas State Penal Codes, yet nothing happens to them.

I'm I worried about slander, hell no I have it all down when, where, & who anytime they want to challenge me bring it on.

I'm finding out that the in the lower to middle class these tournaments are commenting gambling while in the the upper class is just entertainment.

    Gee that seems real fair...LOL.

How did I do? Don't ask.

Just got back from Vegas 3 hours ago. Can't sleep so I figured I'd reply to your request (July 29,2005, 2:16pm) as to how I did - Stardust tournament. If this comes out as boaring as I think it might, maybe it'll help me sleep. My comments tie into the drift of this thread so its not completely out of place.

In a nutshell: tournament results were a lot less than spectacular - to put it mildly. Had to re-buy 3 times and still couldn't get past the first round. Considering my amateur standing, I was satisfied with my play except for the 2nd re-buy - made a few bone-head mistakes. I still have a hard time sitting down from kicking myself so much. Such is life.
Anyway, drew a wild card into the semi-finals!!! :celebrate Played well but needed a push or win on the last hand to win my table. Yah, you gussed it, dealer had a 20, my hopes of making it to the final table were gone in an instant.

To tie this experience to the purpose of this thread - 2M tournament, I think that some people are missing the point of going to a tournament - be it large or small. Now I can't speak for anyone but myself - I may go to a given casino primarily for the tournment but not exclusively for the tournament.

Outside the tournament I enjoy playing some live blackjack, maybe some craps, maybe some video poker, maybe meeting some new and interesting people, and - here comes the corn - some quality time with my bride of 40 years. You see I'm there to enjoy a 3 day holiday, not just to play a tournament and go home as fast as I can get out of there. I hear about some players going to a tournament to only play for the money. "Let's get the damn thing over so I can go home" is some peoples attitude. I say enjoy yourself while you're there. You paid a lot of money to get and be there so why not enjoy. You're probably not going to win the tournament anyway, so make the experience a pleasant one in spit of loosing the tournament. Life is too short. Enjoy every moment you can.

Met a fellow member of this forum (he'll know I'm talking about him) and we BS'd for 2 hours in a corner by some seldom played slot machines. Had some lively conversation that I could not have experienced anywhere else.

My point is make your tournament experiences fun, exciting, and something to really look foreward to. Going just for the money ($2,000,000 to be exact - no, not the Stardust) is like going to a job - a job that you probably won't get paid for anyway.
Enjoy the whole experience, not just the time playing in the tournament.

Well, time to go to sleep, I bored myself to death. :violin:

PS: TXtourplayer: My use of the word "you" does not refer to you personally. It refers to the blackjack tournament communutey in general.

    Just one hand away

Sounds like you had fun anyway and if they haven't changed the semi's format at the Stardust then your wild card into the semi's paid you a little something.

Thanks for the up date, wish you could have had a story with better results for you, maybe next time.
