    Still counting?

Barney - Glad to here that we may cross swords at Global soon. I think you'll be most impressed and I'm sure you'll enjoy the chat also.

Also interested to see that you still think that counting can have an impact on tournament play. As I've said before I'm no expert on BJ and my knowledge of counting is rudimentary to say the least but all I have ever read and heard is that counting is almost of no value in tourney play. I'm open minded about it and willing to listen to all sides so can I ask why you still believe the count is important when so many people would take the contrary view? The way I understand it people count at tourneys out of habit more than anything else.

I'm also not sure you have to chase the big bettors over in bj21.com. In my limited experience over there they seem to bust out early more often than they get $4000+.

As for the 11X BR, I guess I've just been lucky, but really I was illustrating the point that mere mortals like me don't necessarily lose money hand over fist to the gurus over at Global.

And while you've got the printer running I don't suppose you can run off a couple of 1st class tickets for the next Virgin Atlantic flight to LV could you? 1 for me and 1 for Andy; watch out the British are coming! LOL

    Cheers

A hard sell - really, really, hard

It would be a real hard sell to get me to play online. I tried a couple of tournaments online (not Global) and it just turned me off. You see I got into BJ tournaments as a hobby and because I enjoy being in the casino environment. I like playing live BJ and tournament play was just a natural evolution for me. Somehow playing BJ tournaments at home in my PJ's or whatever just doesn't cut it for me but thanks for your interest.

I am not in the slightest criticizing those who do play online. If you and others enjoy it then I say go for it. If everyone in the world had the same likes and dislikes, this world would be a pretty dull place (no wars but dull). Different strokes for different folks - nothin wrong with that.

Since I'm already responding to this thread, let me put my 2 cents in again.

Barney, you can pick up a powerful IBM compatible for under $1,000. This would exclude a printer but you could probably use your present one. Also, if you add $200 to the package, you can get a flat screen too. Since you don't like IBM, not to worry. They sold their PC operations to a Chinese company a while back. Although the new company will be using the IBM logo for a while, it'll be all Chinese. No American parts there!

Just briefly, a few more words about playing against the more seasoned players. As in live BJ tournaments, the less skilled often beat the crap out of the more skilled. Sure the skilled player will win more often but they are far from invincible. I don't think there is one seasoned player out the that would dispute this. Just look at what's happening at the WSOB III !!! As for losing some money, well chalk it up to the cost of education. And remember, as in college, as a general rule, the higher the cost the better the education.

I've babbled on long enough. You guys can easily carry on without me. Andy, Reachy, and Barney - looking forward to seeing each of you some day in Las Vegas. Have a great day - or night if in the UK.:)

Thanks for the comments. I think in a way the online tournament and the casino play are not even comparable. When I sit in my office I have my kids, dogs, wife, flies, and various other pests like my head employee yelling over the hedge he needs me. Also, I can use my calculator and tabulate things like counts, bets, and player notes. In a way it is like a video game. It is fun tho, even tho I havent played for any real money I have tried 20 different strategies which might come in handy during a real money online game. But on my desk there isnt any felt to touch, no chips to count, no grumpy senior citizen watching me for any illegal move to alert the director about. The reason I like blackjack in general is the atmosphere. I will never find that here at my desk.

Concerning the PC. They are so low on dependability as far as hard drives etc. I think you need to have one special built to even have a chance of getting a good machine. My bookkeeper has one in our office and the hard drive has crashed twice. My last Dell was a high range model that had hard drive failure and then had a advertising program get thru the security that ruined it again. I hope my Virtual PC program works well, I have always been leery of it. Those damn Brits talked me into joining them. They sure have a way with words.
