I'm surprised to see no chatter about the upcoming event at "The Soo" next weekend. Is anyone other than Billy C going? I won't make it to this one, but I do have plans to come to St Ignace in June. Make your own plans accordingly!
Not this time for me. Can't get away from work. I'll surely miss seeing my BJT.com friends there, and will also miss the PickEm machines that have been so accommodating on the last few trips. Will be looking forward to seeing competition updates from there as the BJT progresses, though.
I'm still nervous about UP road conditions in early March (or late April for that matter) but right now the 10 day forecast looks okay. Let's hope it doesn't change.
Good luck everyone, especially Billy since, according his signature, that's his ENTIRE strategy I look forward to the results!
Looks like the roads should be open, so let the Kewadin season begin ! Sounds like the Kaukauna/Appleton crowd will be there. I have been told that the ice on the inland lakes is three feet thick, and the snow on top is three feet deep, so will leave my ice fishing rods at home.
Maybe not a new one, but with all the moola you have, one that is a couple of years old will fit your budget. I think the weather is nicer in the desert that where you live. Just guessing, lol.
I didn't make it past the first round so I left early yesterday. Don't know who else was on the final table but I heard from a good source that our jonny21 took second place. Good job jonny21!!!
Kewadin Soo tournament report The tournament was held in the Tahquamenon rooms, away from the main casino floor. It was March in the UP. The snow was piled up high against the windows as you walked down the hallway to the tournament area. Preliminary rounds : There were about 80 entrants in the tournament. Saturday prelims had six or seven at each table, with two advancing. The re-buy rounds (which cost $100) had seven at a table, with just one advancing, and there were some who questioned the limited opportunity to advance out of the re-buy round. Round two on Sunday morning was pretty hectic. There had been the daylight saving time change overnight, and with many of the players coming from Wisconsin, that was a two hour change since arrival at the Soo on Friday. In addition, the table assignments and times were not posted on Saturday night as they usually have been in the past. One unfortunate player did not show up on time for the 10:00 start, and was DQed after about a fifteen minute wait while the staff tried to locate him. The quarterfinals had seven at a table with FOUR advancing, plus the high chip count across all five tables, to get 21 players for the semi-finals. At least one of the tables was down to four players and finished early, with 15 or more hands to go. Angel Run was the high chip count to advance into the semis, and Monkey System and Cadillac Tim also advanced. Nothing special about the semi-finals, that I saw. Two advanced out of the seven at each table, plus one high non-winning chip count across the three tables. I believe that I was the only BJT regular at the final table. It was an all-male final table, with one gentleman from Canada, three Soo area locals, one southern Wisconsin regular, and one I am not sure of. The Canadian man took first place, I took second, and I don't recall how the others played out.
One interesting effect of the unusual formula that they used for advancing was that if you advanced in the first round on Saturday, without having to re-buy, you did not have to win a table to get to the finals.
Congratulations Jonny! Thanks also for the report. Congrats also to the other BJT members who made it to the semis. I haven't played a Kewadin event for a while, but 7 per table in every round does strike me as unusual, especially the 7 with 4 advancing tables.
It seemed a little strange that the tourney director was only seen at the reception on Friday and had the next 2 days off (the two days of play). His fill in people were nice enough and meant well but not up to speed with format, rules, etc. On the bright side, I talked with Virginia (Ginny?) on Saturday night and she all but assured me that she and her old crew would be back in charge of the actual play next time around. They always seemed like a much more competent group that will straighten out the "kinks" we encountered this time around. Billy C
Congratulations Jonny! I left right after getting knocked out of the semifinals. Jonny and I shared one of the semifinal tables. They only had eighty players. One thing they did that they need to improve on is that the rebuys were $100 to get on a table where one advanced from six or seven. That left a sour taste in some peoples' mouths. I bet they would've sold more rebuys if they had two advance and then more players in the quarterfinals and semifinals. I'm sure when the regular tournament directors are back next time they'll return this to the normal, good format.
