    My Three Cents, continued.

Yep, not a done deal. Seems to me that a marketing approach that would access the current huge pool of online poker players and achieve a cross-over to BJ tournaments might offer an opportunity for high volume sites like Party Poker, PokerStars and others.
A realistic poker-like rake for BJ tournaments would probably have to be considered.
Otherwise, to start from scratch would require an inordinate amount of marketing spend in order to build volume, as Global-Player must have discovered.

    But they must be gamblers...

I agree that it's a risk but then what business venture isn't? What factors do you think will most affect the potential success of UBT and online BJT in general? My personal thoughts on the matter are that if you can get people playing they will come back again because the format is so good. I think it's more fun and exciting than poker which I used to play a lot of online. When I found out about the BJT format I found Global, played once and was hooked. I'm sure others will be too.

I bet 7 or 8 years ago people were asking the same questions about online poker.

    Points and Marketing

I cant believe that the majority players on Global Casino give a shit about the points system and league tables (I thought this had been dealt with on here and was done and dusted).

However, I do agree with BJFAN4 and Sir Reachy that Global could do more to promote their online Blackjack Tournaments.

If Global can pay for advertisements on American radio (U.S.A. play in the afternoon) I cant understand why they don’t target their more natural evening European audience with a few lines in the casino press.

    dial up problems

I wish I could play more tournaments on GPC. My problem is that when I'm at my summer house I only have very slow dial up available. I have tried to play but end up missing bets and plays. I'm sure others have the same problem. If a solution for this problem could be found I'm sure more players would play. I just can't see wasting money trying to play. Therefore I only play when at home on my DSL.

    Reasons for lack of play

When I was going around the country playing tournament last year pluging Global-Player the biggest problems I heard from the players were:

(These are in no set order)

    1. We don't have a computor.

    2. How do we know if they are cheating us?

    3. I can't sign-in (this actually happens a lot).

    4. My credit card was not accepted by their cashier.

    5. I don't want to pay the transfer fees.

    6. I use to play, but I keep getting knocked off line.

    7. I can't get a good conection, I only have dail up.

    8. It just isn't the same as playing live at a land based
    casino.

    9. I tried sending funds, but they don't accept payments
    by Western Union anymore.

    10. I'll wait until they start getting bigger tournaments
    of satellite qualifiers.

    11. I was losing to much money online.

Then of course you have the players that just don't know about Global-Player and I guess advertising may help.

Why is online poker so successful?

Those are all good points TXtourplayer but surely the same arguements apply to online poker which has nevertheless been a phenomenal success and I suspect has outstripped anybodys initial expectations . In the past 5 years poker has entered global mainstream culture because of the internet. The european market inparticular has exploded. If BJT can tap into that vast unexploited market they would make a killing. But it's about education and promotion. I suspect that very few europeans know about the BJT format, if they did I bet ($100 :) ) that they would flock to the sites.

Another factor I believe is the difference in "culture" between BJ and poker and the people that play. This is just an observation from far away and I may be miles off the mark but it appears to me that poker by it's very essence is a very extrovert macho bullish game involving alot of bravado and intutition and where you go mano a mano. BJ on the other hand is about staying under the radar, disguise, not making a big noise or alerting "the enemy" to your existence and is less about intuition and more about calculating your next move "scientifically". In fact alot of the time it involves fighting your intuition and sticking to "the book". In these ways the games of poker and bj are diametrically opposed to each other. Of course this shouldn't be the case and is why it has been a good idea to bring top poker players into the UBT.

So is this cultural difference the main reason why online BJT may fail when compared to poker? Are BJ players more reluctant to put their heads above the parapet? What is needed is a load of european online players to start to win places at the UBT and WSOB and other big tournaments and shake the place up a bit ;)

Just to reiterate, these are my views based on only a few months experience of blackjack culture from the other side of the pond. I'm not trying to be offensive at all so please don't look at it that way. I'm just suprised that something as good as BJT hasn't been more successful online to date. It's almost made for online play - limited rounds with a definite endpoint, excitement, suprise, skill, luck and the advantage I think it may have over poker is that everybody can be in with a chance up till the very end. Even when you think you may be down and out a few hands from the end with a little bit of luck you can be challenging on that final hand.

I expect there will be a few differences of opinion on some of the things I have just said and it'd be interesting to hear them. Do you think I'm barking up the wrong tree or have I hit the nail on the head?

    Cheers

    Completely agree

the people in here who say that because there's no guarantee of a large audience they understand why glabal haven't advertised are obviously working for global and trying to justifty their lack of promotion.
I come from the UK and hear little to no information about online BJT. Global can choose not to advertise, but at the same time the general consensus is that they're failing to get the liquidity needed to keep the players that that they have.

    Excellent, another UK BJT fan

    Hi Victor

As you can probably guess both myself and Andy are from the UK. Only another 2 needed for a full table...

I've got an idea, what about a UK BJT Online Championship at Global?

    Use to anyway

Colin use to play a lot at Global, but I have been so busy lately I haven't got to play much myself.

Monkeysystem brought up a good point in his post, several of the regular Global players have been away at land based tournaments and they should be getting back online playing soon. ;)

As far as Global-Player advertising in Europe I have an idea I will suggest to Global-Player that might help build interest in their site, wish me luck.

    UK Colin

Colin 520 is still playing on Global Sit & Go Blackjack tournaments (see tables).

I don’t think that Colin has ever posted on this site (another Colin 563 did years ago).

I have not seen him in the chat room for several weeks but he only did tend to come on during the Wednesday tournaments.

Hope to see him again soon in the chat room.

    secret bets now in 1on1

As no-one has objected, the 1on1's now have a secret bet in the last round. This is indicated by "SecB" in the "BJ rules' paragraph in the sidebar.

    Competion is good for all

Seems like Blackjack21.com already has the fast starting game. It starts when there are 3 players or more and can handle up to eight. There is a two minute clock that starts when the third player comes in.
And I just received an e-mail about a free $1,000 tournament they are having. Plus they are giving away a six game if you enter five. I like the bonuses and the shot at the $1,000 with no entry fee.:D

    No Secret Bet

This a letter that I wrote to Global-Player today after having a discussions with 3 other players who were in the chat room .I also attached Global' response .So if you have an opinion on this let us all know .

I writing you on behalf of some players who were speaking with me today on
Global in your chat room. These players along with myself do not like the secret
bet on the last hand during the 1 on 1 duels. It just adds more variance to a
game that already has enough to last a lifetime.

If you trying to hold tournaments that can be skillfully played you need to
consider removing the secret bet on the last hand .

    Thank You

    Joe Pane

    Dear Mr. Pane,

    Thank you for your patience.

In the meantime Micha informed us, that he had posted this question at
blackjacktournaments.com but no one came back with a negative feedback.
We try very hard to fulfill our member's wishes, but this is only
possible if we are properly informed.

Micha cannot do anything more than ask all players in their public forum
and if they agree, he implements it. Please discuss this question with
your friends internally and then come up with a proposal which would be
    backed up by a majority.

We then will forward this information to Micha so that he can act
    accordingly.

We thank you and your friends for your effort and look forward to your
    reply.

    Kind regards,

    Global-Player.com

    Crossed Wires

In a note that has nothing to do with secret bets but Global's response is that they listen to what the customers want . With the weekly point standing on Global ,A lot of players have been asking for a change in the way the point bonus is given out and nothing was ever done about it . Now 1 or 2 players ask for a secret bet and its implemented . This seems to not make much sense .

Why not start a specific thread with a poll attached?

    Joep

Why not set up a specific thread with a poll to ask the secret bet question? I would do it as I'm online now but I don't feel I am really the right person.

    Micha/Pumi

I vaguely remember the question being asked in a roundabout sort of way hidden in one of the threads but I don't think it caught many peoples attention.

    Cheers

Ps. I vote for dropping the secret bet!

    Lets drop the secret bet.

I don't like the secret bet either. My vote is to drop it.

But I will say that I appreciate Global's efforts to try to provide us players with what we want.

Now if they'll give us the option for insuring and doubling for less without having to go all in to do it, we'll really have a good product to enjoy.

    No secret bet!!

I agree with the previous posters. First, there was only 1 mention of the secret bet from Micha asking if there were any objections. It was done in a roundabout way. However, Tex did respond to it saying to keep the secret bet out and not turn it into a gameshow.

I have been playing the 1 on 1's regularly since they started and really enjoy them. I've played twice since the secret bet was put in place. I can tell you I will NOT be playing even 1 more game until the secret bet is removed. It takes away any skill involved in the cruicial final hand and turns it into a guessing/luck game. No thanks.

I don't like the gimmicks, but...

Like I replied back, I don't like the secret bet.

However, it isn't about me. I always try to take a poll or survey from the other players on what they want.

I think we need to keep sight on what will bring us the most players for the tournaments.

Just from reading the above posts it does however sound like the secert bet is not a very big success. :(

I do however have results and comments about DD's and insurance for less, which about 95% of the players would like to see added to the Global format.
