    possible outcomes

Here's what can happen in the group, considering 1 point for win and 0 for lose:
    0-2-2-2
    0-1-2-3
    1-1-2-2
    1-1-1-3
As we can see there is small possibility for 3-way tie by points (first and last cases).
    4-way tie is theoretically impossible.
It is clear in the third case (1-1-2-2) who is advancing, however we need to determine first and second. As it was offered in Rick's example - the total score can be applied to determine the winner. If the scores are also the same, then we should look who won the match (already played) between them.
Now about more complicated cases (1st and 4th):
Both cases are 3-way tie by points, but it can be
    - no tie by scores
    - 2-way tie by scores
    - 3-way tie by scores
If there is no tie by scores, then everything is clear
If there is 2-way tie by scores, then the winner can be determined by the match played between them (the one which is already played)
If there is 3-way tie by scores then in the first case (0-2-2-2) 3-player Mini match (2 winners) of three hands can be played to find out two advancees. First place will be granted to the winner in the match (already played) between them.
If there is 3-way tie by scores then in the forth case (1-1-1-3) 3-player Mini
match (one winner) of three hands can be played to find out second advancee.
